Welcome to Pro Typing Test! If you're reading this, you're probably a complete beginner to typing. Maybe you've never learned proper finger placement. Maybe you still look at the keyboard while typing. Maybe you use only two fingers (hunt and peck). That's okay. Everyone starts somewhere.
I've taught over 25,000 beginners - from school students to job seekers to retired professionals. The ones who succeed follow a simple formula: proper technique + daily practice + patience. This guide gives you all three. Follow it step by step, and you'll reach 40+ WPM within 3 months.
1 Understand What is a Typing Test
A typing test measures two things: speed (WPM) and accuracy (%). When you take a test on Pro Typing Test, you'll type a passage for a fixed time (1, 2, 5, or 10 minutes). After the test, you'll see:
- Gross WPM: Total words typed per minute (including errors)
- Net WPM: Total words minus errors × time penalty
- Accuracy Percentage: (Correct keystrokes ÷ Total keystrokes) × 100
- Time: Your test duration
2 Master the Home Row (The Foundation)
The home row is where your fingers rest when not typing. Learn this first. Practice until you can find these keys WITHOUT looking.
A S D F J K L ;
Left Hand: A (pinky), S (ring), D (middle), F (index)
Right Hand: J (index), K (middle), L (ring), ; (pinky)
Both Thumbs: Space bar
💡 F and J keys have small bumps - feel for them without looking!
Daily Exercise (Week 1 only):
- Type
asdf jkl; asdf jkl; asdf jkl;for 5 minutes - Type
fdsa ;lkj fdsa ;lkj fdsa ;lkjfor 5 minutes (reverse) - Combine:
asdf jkl; fdsa ;lkj asdf jkl; fdsa ;lkj
Goal: Type home row keys at 15-20 WPM with 98% accuracy before moving to next step.
3 Learn Proper Finger Placement
Each finger has assigned keys. This is NOT optional. Using all 10 fingers is what separates 30 WPM typists from 70 WPM typists.
Left Hand Finger Assignment:
- Pinky (pink): A, Q, Z, 1, `, Tab, Caps Lock, Left Shift
- Ring (ring): S, W, X, 2
- Middle (middle): D, E, C, 3
- Index (pointer): F, R, V, 4, G, T, B, 5 (covers 6 keys!)
Right Hand Finger Assignment:
- Index (pointer): J, U, M, 6, H, Y, N, 7 (covers 6 keys!)
- Middle (middle): K, I, , (comma), 8
- Ring (ring): L, O, . (period), 9
- Pinky (pink): ;, P, /, 0, -, =, [, ], \, Right Shift, Enter
4 Start with 1-Minute Tests
As a beginner, 1-minute typing tests are your best friend. Here's why:
- ✅ No fatigue - you stay focused the entire test
- ✅ Quick feedback - you can take 5-10 tests in one sitting
- ✅ Easy to track progress - small improvements are visible daily
- ✅ Builds confidence - you feel successful every day
How to practice with 1-minute tests:
- Take Pro Typing Test's 1-minute test - it's free!
- Do 5 rounds per day (total 5 minutes of actual testing)
- Write down your scores (or use our built-in tracking)
- Focus on accuracy above 95% - don't worry about speed yet

5 Focus on Accuracy First, Speed Second
This is the most important lesson in this guide. Accuracy is the foundation of speed. You cannot build speed on bad habits.
The Accuracy Math:
Typist A: 30 WPM with 85% accuracy = Effective 25.5 WPM
Typist B: 25 WPM with 98% accuracy = Effective 24.5 WPM
Result: They're almost the same! But Typist B has better habits and will reach 50 WPM faster.
Your Beginner Accuracy Targets:
- Week 1-2: 92-94% accuracy (allow some mistakes - you're learning)
- Week 3-4: 95%+ accuracy (consistent now)
- Month 2 onward: 96-98% accuracy (professional level)
Pro Tip: If your accuracy drops below 92%, SLOW DOWN. You're rushing. Type at a comfortable speed where errors are rare.
6 Practice with Simple Words & Sentences
Don't jump into complex paragraphs. Start with the 100 most common English words. Master these first.
Top 30 Most Common Words (Start Here):
the, be, to, of, and, a, in, that, have, I, it, for, not, on, with, he, as, you, do, at, this, but, his, by, from, they, we, say, her, she
Practice Method:
- Type each word 10 times - focus on accuracy
- Then create short sentences: "I have a pen. You have a book."
- When comfortable, move to beginner typing paragraphs
Resource: Bigram Blitz - practice common two-letter combinations like "th", "he", "in", "er", "an".
7 Gradually Increase Test Duration
Once you're comfortable with 1-minute tests (18-22 WPM with 95% accuracy), increase your test duration. This builds typing endurance.
| Week | Test Duration | Goal | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1-2 | Only 1-minute tests | 18-22 WPM, 95%+ accuracy | Build foundation |
| Week 3-4 | Mix 1-min + 2-min tests | 20-25 WPM, 95%+ accuracy | Build slight endurance |
| Week 5-6 | Mix 1-min, 2-min, 5-min | 22-28 WPM, 95%+ accuracy | Increase stamina |
| Week 7-8 | Mix 1-min, 2-min, 5-min, 10-min | 25-32 WPM, 95%+ accuracy | Job-ready endurance |
Note: Don't rush this progression. Stay at each level until you feel comfortable and maintain your accuracy.
8 Use Structured Typing Lessons
Pro Typing Test offers free structured lessons designed specifically for beginners. Each lesson builds on the previous one:

- Lesson 4: All Letters Mixed
- Lesson 5: Common Words (100 most frequent)
- Lesson 6: Short Sentences
- Lesson 7: Simple Paragraphs
- Lesson 8: Punctuation Practice

9 Track Your Progress Weekly
You can't improve what you don't measure. Track your typing speed every week. Use this table or create your own:
| Week | 1-min WPM | Accuracy | 5-min WPM | What I Practiced |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | ___ | ___% | ___ | Home row only |
| Week 2 | ___ | ___% | ___ | Home + top row |
| Week 3 | ___ | ___% | ___ | All letters |
| Week 4 | ___ | ___% | ___ | Common words |
Use: Typing Benchmark Tool for automatic progress tracking.
10 Set Realistic Weekly Goals
Don't aim for 60 WPM in your first month. That's unrealistic and leads to frustration. Set small, achievable goals:
- Month 1 Goal: 20-25 WPM with 95%+ accuracy
- Month 2 Goal: 25-30 WPM with 95%+ accuracy
- Month 3 Goal: 30-35 WPM with 95%+ accuracy
- Month 4-6 Goal: 35-45 WPM with 95%+ accuracy
