1 Understand What is a Typing Test

A typing test measures two things: speed (WPM) and accuracy (%). When you take a test on Pro Typing Test, you'll type a passage for a fixed time (1, 2, 5, or 10 minutes). After the test, you'll see:

  • Gross WPM: Total words typed per minute (including errors)
  • Net WPM: Total words minus errors × time penalty
  • Accuracy Percentage: (Correct keystrokes ÷ Total keystrokes) × 100
  • Time: Your test duration

2 Master the Home Row (The Foundation)

The home row is where your fingers rest when not typing. Learn this first. Practice until you can find these keys WITHOUT looking.

3 Learn Proper Finger Placement

Each finger has assigned keys. This is NOT optional. Using all 10 fingers is what separates 30 WPM typists from 70 WPM typists.

Left Hand Finger Assignment:

  • Pinky (pink): A, Q, Z, 1, `, Tab, Caps Lock, Left Shift
  • Ring (ring): S, W, X, 2
  • Middle (middle): D, E, C, 3

4 Start with 1-Minute Tests

As a beginner, 1-minute typing tests are your best friend. Here's why:

5 Focus on Accuracy First, Speed Second

This is the most important lesson in this guide. Accuracy is the foundation of speed. You cannot build speed on bad habits.

The Accuracy Math:

Typist A: 30 WPM with 85% accuracy = Effective 25.5 WPM

Typist B: 25 WPM with 98% accuracy = Effective 24.5 WPM

Result: They're almost the same! But Typist B has better habits and will reach 50 WPM faster.

6 Practice with Simple Words & Sentences

Don't jump into complex paragraphs. Start with the 100 most common English words. Master these first.

Practice Method:

  • Type each word 10 times - focus on accuracy

10 Set Realistic Weekly Goals

Don't aim for 60 WPM in your first month. That's unrealistic and leads to frustration. Set small, achievable goals:
