What is WPM in typing?

+
WPM stands for Words Per Minute. It's the standard measure of typing speed, calculated by counting how many words you can type in one minute. A "word" is standardized as 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation. Learn more in our What is WPM guide.

+
Yes! Pro Typing Test is completely free to use. All typing tests, math tests, lessons, games, and practice materials are available at no cost. We may show ads to support the website, but all features remain free forever. No hidden charges, no premium plans!

Do I need to create an account?

+
No account needed! You can start typing tests immediately without registration. However, creating a free account allows you to save your progress, track your history, and sync your achievements across devices. Account features are coming soon!

How is typing speed calculated?

+
Typing speed formula: WPM = (Total characters typed / 5) / Time in minutes. We also factor in errors - incorrect words reduce your effective speed. For example, if you type 200 characters in 1 minute with 2 errors, your Net WPM would be around 38. Try our 1-minute test to check your speed!

What is a good typing speed?

+
  • Average: 40 WPM
  • Good: 50-60 WPM
  • Professional: 70-80 WPM
  • Expert: 90+ WPM
For government exams in India, requirement is usually 30-40 WPM depending on the position. Check our exam requirements guide for detailed information.

What's the difference between Gross WPM and Net WPM?

+
Gross WPM is your raw typing speed without considering errors. Net WPM subtracts errors from your score: Net WPM = Gross WPM - (Errors / Time). This gives a more accurate measure of your actual typing ability. We always show Net WPM in our tests because it reflects real-world performance.

How can I improve my typing speed?

+
  • Practice daily for 15-20 minutes
  • Use proper finger placement (touch typing)
  • Focus on accuracy first, then speed
  • Take regular breaks to avoid fatigue
  • Use our structured lessons
  • Check our 60 WPM guide for a structured plan
Consistency is key! Even 15 minutes daily shows significant improvement within 4-6 weeks.
